Application for Federal Student Aid
Eligibility for most federal student aid programs is based on financial need rather than on academic achievement. To have his or her financial need determined, a student must complete and file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). All post-secondary schools will require that students have a FAFSA on file if any type of financial assistance is being requested, including scholarships awarded by the school.
FAFSA Tips
Its time for students to begin applying for Federal Financial Aid for next year. The following are tips and suggestions to help make the process smoother for your students.
►Apply Early! The best time to apply is February-April. Waiting could delay aid processing.
►Complete application accurately and completely. Remember to provide all signatures required.
►File Federal tax return as soon as possible. Keep copies of all tax returns, W-2's, and any other benefits or income received and be prepared to provide copies to the Financial Aid Office if requested.
►Be aware of payments deadlines and try to have financial aid file complete prior to those payment due dates.
►Explore financial aid options early at www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov. This site can give families and early estimate of their eligibility for federal aid. It is also great for familiarzing them with the financial aid process and the various types of aid that are available. Students can also easily transfer their information from fafsa4caster to FAFSA on the web, making the application process much smoother!
